Governance

How CoderTraining.ca manages AI, coding standards, security, and data. Written for hospital privacy officers, HIM managers, and institutional procurement teams.

AI Governance

How AI is used

CoderTraining.ca uses artificial intelligence to support educational guidance and learning activities. AI-generated responses are validated against applicable coding standards where available — the system retrieves evidence from licensed ICD-10-CA and CCI content before generating any response.

AI disclosure

CoderTraining.ca uses artificial intelligence to support educational guidance and learning activities. AI-generated responses are validated against applicable coding standards where available. Learners remain responsible for exercising professional judgment when applying coding standards in clinical practice.

AI technology

  • Large language model (LLM) technology for text generation
  • Semantic search against licensed CIHI content (vector + full-text retrieval)
  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) grounds every answer in official source material
  • No patient data is processed — all cases are educational / fictional
  • User inputs are not used to train AI models

Human verification

AI-generated coding guidance is for educational purposes only. For production coding decisions, users must exercise professional judgment and verify against official CIHI sources (Folio, Canadian Coding Standards, DAD/NACRS Abstracting Manuals). CoderTraining.ca does not imply certification or endorsement by CIHI.

Standards update process

CIHI updates ICD-10-CA and CCI annually. When new versions are released, the platform database is updated to import the new code tables, RAG documentation, and validation rules. The standards version in use is displayed on all coding screens. Users are notified when the platform is updated to a new standards release.

Security & Data

Infrastructure

  • Hosted on enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure (Canadian and US regions)
  • All data in transit encrypted (TLS 1.2+)
  • All data at rest encrypted
  • Authentication uses industry-standard JWT tokens with session management
  • Row-level security enforced at the database layer

Data handling

  • No real patient data is stored or processed
  • Coding questions are educational in nature
  • User activity (assessments, questions) is logged for educational progress tracking
  • Questions and answers are processed by AI services under standard data processing agreements
  • No PHIPA-regulated personal health information is handled

Compliance posture

The platform is designed for educational use in healthcare organizations. It does not handle personal health information (PHI) or patient records. For organizations with specific security requirements, please contact us for an enterprise security questionnaire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I just use ChatGPT or a general AI assistant for coding questions?
General AI tools don't have access to licensed CIHI content. ICD-10-CA and CCI are proprietary to CIHI — the codes and their descriptions are not in the public domain and are not reliably present in AI training data. General AI tools may give answers based on US coding systems (ICD-10-CM), produce codes from a previous fiscal year, or hallucinate codes that don't exist in ICD-10-CA. CoderTraining.ca retrieves answers directly from licensed ICD-10-CA and CCI source material before generating any response.
Do AI answers count as professional coding advice?
No. All AI-generated guidance is for educational purposes only. For production coding decisions, always verify against the official CIHI Folio platform, the applicable Canadian Coding Standards, and the DAD or NACRS Abstracting Manual for the current fiscal year. Learners remain responsible for professional judgment in clinical practice.
Can coders use the AI tutor during actual clinical coding work?
The platform is designed and licensed for educational use. We recommend using it for training, self-study, and professional development — not as a real-time coding aid during active clinical coding sessions. For real-time coding support, refer to the CIHI Folio platform and the Canadian Coding Standards.
How current are the coding standards on the platform?
The current standards version is displayed on all coding screens. CIHI releases ICD-10-CA and CCI updates annually. The platform is updated when new versions are released, and users are notified of updates. You can always confirm the version in use from your profile settings or the standards display in the top navigation bar.
Is my data private? Will my questions be used to train AI?
No patient data is stored or processed — all scenarios are educational. Educational questions are processed per our privacy policy. User inputs are not used to train AI models. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
